March 1997 North Island Ex-tropical Cyclone Gavin
Ex-tropical Cyclone Gavin brought high winds, high seas, heavy rain and flooding to parts of Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne. Three homes were evacuated in Gisborne due to wind damage and a family was evacuated in Northland.

There were flash floods on the East Cape and Te Araroa was isolated.
September 1988 North Island Storm
There were high winds in the Bay of Plenty which caused one casualty when a tree was blown over onto a vehicle. Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Manawatu-Wanganui suffered severe flooding. A Civil Defence Emergency was declared on the 2nd in the Manawatu-Wanganui region.
July 1988 North Island Flooding
Heavy rain, flooding and landslips were experienced in Auckland, Waikato and Gisborne, and caused damage and disruption. An teenager was presumed dead after being swept away in the Waiwera Estuary.
March 1988 North Island Ex-tropical Cyclone Bola
Ex-tropical Cyclone Bola struck most regions of the North Island, in particular Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne and Northland, bringing widespread damage with combinations of heavy rain, flooding, high winds and heavy seas. Two people were drowned in Northland, three in Gisborne and two in Hawke's Bay. Three people were injured by high winds in Taranaki. The tail end of the cyclone later struck Tasman-Nelson.
