A 48 year old man drowned at Whangamata when the outboard motor of his 11-foot dingy failed to start and the falling tide swept the boat out of the harbour and into the tumbling surf. The waves soon swamped and overturned the boat. The man and his 11 year old son also in the boat were rescued but the father could not be revived.
