A prolonged period of rain brought flooding and slips to many parts of the North Island, but most particularly the Waikato. Across the Waikato, farmlands and roads were flooded and homes were evacuated. The damage totalled millions of dollars.

Heavy rain brought flooding to Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Hawke's Bay in the North Island, and high winds were also experienced. Heavy rain and flooding occurred in Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast in the South Island. Parts of Northland experienced extreme rainfall, and a man was injured when a car hit him as he stood in flood waters. One person was killed when a car hit a fallen tree.

Heavy rain, flooding, heavy seas and high winds affected parts of the upper North Island, with extensive flooding in Northland and Hawke's Bay. A CDE was delcared in Northern Hawke's Bay and evacuations took place. Homes were also evacuated in the Far North. Snow fell in the Central North Island.

The remains of Cyclone Fergus brought heavy rain, flooding, landslips, high winds and high seas to the North Island from Northland to Gisborne, mainly affecting Northland and Coromandel. The storm caused significant damage and a CDE was declared for parts of the Waikato. A man was drowned in Northland and one person died in Thames.

March 1988 North Island Ex-tropical Cyclone Bola
Ex-tropical Cyclone Bola struck most regions of the North Island, in particular Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne and Northland, bringing widespread damage with combinations of heavy rain, flooding, high winds and heavy seas. Two people were drowned in Northland, three in Gisborne and two in Hawke's Bay. Three people were injured by high winds in Taranaki. The tail end of the cyclone later struck Tasman-Nelson.

Ex-tropical Cyclone Giselle affected every region in New Zealand, with high winds, heavy rain, flooding, landslips and high seas. The interislander 'Wahine' sunk in Wellington Harbour during the storm, with the loss of 51 lives. Other casualties: one in Northland, two in Wellington due to high winds: a man who went missing on Stewart Island. Weather-related injuries were reported in Waikato, Manawatu-Wanganui and Wellington.
