A broad ridge of high pressure extended from a high in the south Tasman Sea to another high east of New Zealand, cradling a shallow low in the central Tasman. A low-level northerly wind maximum helped spawn a new line of activity to the west of the original front. This new line became the predominant "front" during the morning, with strong vertical motions causing rapid development of cumulonimbus cloud and thundery rain in the moist, unstable air.
