June-July 1979 Upper North Island Flooding ( 1979-06-30 )

Heavy rain brought flooding and slips to Northland and Auckland. A boy was killed in Northland when his car plunged into a flooded river, and an Auckland woman was injured by a piece of floating debris. A 42 year old man drowned after his boat capsized in heavy seas near Whangarei.

Affected LifelineState Highway 16 between Kumeu and Helensville was closed due to flooding. State Highway 16 between Muriwai and Parakai was closed.

ImpactMany houses, garages and properties around the region were flooded. The water was coming up into houses and trickling down into houses.

Affected LifelineThe Northerner train was delayed for four hours on the 1st. The rail line north of Henderson was scoured out in two places.

ImpactThe Auckland Central Fire Service responded to more than 160 calls.

CommentRivers and streams that overtopped their banks included: Hingaia Stream, Oratia Stream, Opanuku Stream, Meola Creek, Oakly Creek, the Kaipara River Catchment, and the Kumeu River.

DamageOpanuku Stream did considerable damage to a motor camp on Edmonton Road and atleast one caravan was swept away.

Damage CostAt Mt Roskill, children's clothing and imported yarn worth between $20,000 and $100,000 ($96,200-$480,800 2010 dollars) was ruined when floodwater swept through the the Stoddard Road factory. A creek had overflowed and flooded the factory to a depth of 0.29 metres.

Physical CharacteristicThere were floodwaters up to a metre deep in the badly damaged Orakei Maori Church in Tamaki Drive.
