July_2021_South_Island_Flooding
The combination of a moist northwesterly flow over central New Zealand and a slow-moving front over the central South Island persisted for several days. The severity of the storm was due to its prolonged nature, with heavy rain persisting over three to four days. Heavy rainfalls occurred in the mountains, as the mild conditions meant that rain instead of snow fell at higher altitudes than usual. Widespread and severe flooding occurred, with Westport being particularly badly affected when the Buller River broke its banks and inundated the town.
July 2014 Upper North Island Storm
From 8-12 July there was a very strong moist northeasterly flow over the north of the North Island. This brought severe gales, which blew down trees, blew roofs off houses and cut power to thousands of households. There was also prolonged heavy rain which caused flooding in some areas. Northland was worst affected, with much damage resulting.
November 2008 Upper South Island Flooding
Heavy rain brought flooding to the Nelson-Tasman region, Marlborough and the West Coast. There was also heavy rain in parts of the North Island, mainly Taranaki, and high winds hit various places across the country.

July 2008 North Island Weather Bomb
The first storm of three in a one-week period. A deep low brought high winds, seas and rainfall to the upper North Island, causing widespread power cuts along with flooding and damage to trees and buildings. Three people were drowned in the Bay of Plenty.
February 2008 New Zealand Storm
Troughs and lows brought unsettled and stormy weather to several parts of the country from the 10th to the 16th. Manawatu-Wanganui, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago experienced severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding causing number of road accidents which resulted three casualties and some injuries. In Otago a man was swept away in Silver Stream, near Mosgiel and drowned.

A fisherman was drowned in heavy seas at Okoromai Bay.
June 2006 New Zealand Snow and High Winds
The South Island was affected by snow and heavy rain while high winds battered the North Island. Snow fell in Canterbury overnight on the 11th June and lay for about two weeks, causing damage and loss of power and business. Flooding caused evacuations on the West Coast, and a tornado occurred in Greymouth. A man was drowned after being swept of a vessel near Wellington and one person was injured in a car accident in Northland.
April 2006 Otago Flooding
Heavy rain caused flooding and slips in Otago. Worst affected were Taieri Plain, to Dunedin and Oamaru. There were 50 evacuees from Oamaru and 300 from Mosgiel.
August 2004 New Zealand Storm
A storm affected much of New Zealand with combinations of high winds, heavy rain, flooding, heavy seas and snow. Cold southerlies affected much of the South Island. A tornado caused havoc in Taranaki, killing two people and injuring two others. Two men were drowned off Northland when their boat sank in rough weather, and a woman was drowned in a Wairarapa stream. A West Coast man was struck by lightning and four people were injured by an avalanche in Otago.
February 2004 North Island Storm
A storm brought high winds, heavy rain, flooding and slips to much fo the North Island as well as the upper South Island. The lower North Island was severely affected, with 100-year floods in Manawatu-Wanganui and 50-year floods in Wellington causing millions of dollars of damage. Thousands of people were evacuated. Two people drowned in the sea at Wellington and one person was presumed drowned in the Marlborough Sounds. Trees felled on houses caused injuries to a girl in Wellington and a woman in Auckland. A person was also injured after felled power lines started a house fire.
October 2003 New Zealand Storm
Heavy rain was experienced in parts of the North Island, and brought serious flooding to Paekakariki. A civil defence emergency was declared for the Kapiti Coast. There were associated snowfalls in the North Island and South Island high country. Four people were killed during the storm.
June 2002 Upper North Island Weather Bomb
A weather bomb brought heavy rain, flooding and high winds and high seas to much of the upper North Island. A State of Emergency was declared in two parts of the Waikato and much damage was done to public and private property. A woman drowned in the Coromandel and three people were injured in separate incidents.
March-April 2002 North Island and Canterbury High Winds and Seas
High winds and seas were experienced in Auckland, Hawke's Bay, Wellington and Canterbury, and caused some damage. Some homes in Hawke's bay were evacuated and damaged by high seas. Two people drowned in Manukau Harbour and another person drowned at the Waimakariri River mouth in Canterbury.
April 2001 North Island Ex-tropical Cyclone Sose
Ex-tropical Cyclone Sose brought high winds, heavy rain, high seas and flooding to many parts of the North Island. Three people were killed in a weather-related car accident in the Waikato and one man was drowned in a river in the Bay of Plenty. A number of injuries also occurred.
October 2000 New Zealand Weather Bomb
A "bomb" depression brought high winds, heavy, rain, flooding and high seas to parts of the South Island and North Island. Canterbury was the main affected area, with road closures, power cuts and much damage done to property. A man was drowned on the West Coast after his boat flipped in heavy seas.
April 1999 New Zealand Snow and Marine Inundation
A combination of gale force south-westerlies, high rainfall, low air pressure and high tides produced sea flooding on the upper North Island's west coast. Snow, high winds and thunderstorms were also experienced in parts of the North Island and southern South Island. A boy was drowned near Dargaville and a woman was killed in a car accident on a snow-covered road near Wairouru.

Three fishermen were drowned in heavy seas and high winds in the Bay of Islands.
March 1998 Southern NZ Ex-tropical Cyclone Yali
Ex-tropical cyclone Yali brought high winds, heavy rain, high seas and some flooding to all regions in the South Island as well as Wellington. One person was drowned in the sea in Taranaki.
