July 2020 Upper North Island Flooding
Over the period 15-19 July there were heavy rainfalls and subsequent flooding in some northern parts of the North Island. During this period was a deep slow-moving low in the North Tasman Sea, and persistent high pressure over and to the south of the South Island. There were several outbreaks of very heavy rain in the north of the North Island with some areas experiencing significant flooding, especially parts of Northland.
March 2017 North Island Heavy Rain and Flooding
Very heavy rain fell over many areas of the North Island during the period 7-13 March, which resulted in severe flooding. A slow-moving depression remained in the North Tasman Sea for most of this period. Fronts on the eastern edge of the depression brought the rain.

From 8-12 July there was a very strong moist northeasterly flow over the north of the North Island. This brought severe gales, which blew down trees, blew roofs off houses and cut power to thousands of households. There was also prolonged heavy rain which caused flooding in some areas. Northland was worst affected, with much damage resulting.
June 2014 New Zealand Storm
A complex low pressure system extended from the mid-Tasman Sea to the northwest of the North Island, bringing a moist northeasterly flow over NZ. This resulted in severe gales in many northern North Island areas, with Auckland being particularly hard hit. Meanwhile, a slow-moving high to the southeast of the South Island pushed colder air onto the island. This clashed with the warmer air coming from the northeast over North Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast, resulting in heavy rain.

A storm affected most places in the North Island, as well as a few places in the South Island, with heavy rain, flooding, high winds and heavy seas. Particularly heavy rain fell in Northland, the Coromandel and East Cape. Three people died in Northland in car accidents on wet roads.

The first storm of three in a one-week period. A deep low brought high winds, seas and rainfall to the upper North Island, causing widespread power cuts along with flooding and damage to trees and buildings. Three people were drowned in the Bay of Plenty.

Many regions in the North Island experienced heavy rain and flooding, particularly Northland, Taranaki and Wellington. There was also flooding on the West Coast. Some rivers in western Taranaki reached record levels and flows, and caused damage. A Tornado struck the Tarawera area in Hawke's Bay, causing property damage.
April 2008 North Island and Nelson Storm
Many parts of the North Island, plus Tasman-Nelson, experienced electrical storms, heavy rain, flooding, slips and high winds. The 'Mangatepopo Tradgedy' occurred, in which seven people drowned and one person was injured in Tongariro National Park. During a hunt near Dargaville, lightning killed one man and injured five others.

The remnants of Tropical Cyclone Funa brought high winds and heavy rain to the North Island, particularly the lower North Island, and also the northern South Island. Power cuts occurred and the combination of gales and high temperatures caused multiple scrub fires in the lower North Island.
January 2008 Manawatu-Wanganui and Wellington Flooding
Extreme rainfall around the Tararua Range brought flooding to Manawatu-Wanganui and Wellington, around Horowhenua and the Kapiti Coast. People were evacuated and damage was caused to farmland and roads.

Heavy rain brought flooding and slips to Northland, the Coromandel, Hawke's Bay and Manawatu. Homes and schools were evacuated in the Hastings District and property was damaged.

Northland, particularly the Far North, experienced thunderstorms, heavy rain, flooding, slips, and high winds. Residents and tourists were isolated on the Far North peninsula when a bridge was damaged. A sailor on a ship off the coast of Northland was injured by a gust of wind. Flooding and slips also occurred in the western Waikato and there were rough seas in Auckland.
