A large deep depression moved east over the North Island, with a strong southerly flow around the southern side of the depression. Intense cumulonimbus cells in a cold front crossed northern districts.

A tornado struck Cable Bay at 12:30pm on the 9th, lasting less than a minute.
The tornado appeared to have come in off the ocean from the north-west, and roared across State Highway 10 up the left side of Stratford Drive for 150m, before turning left into Dudley Crescent and disappearing over a hill into rural land.
Six homes were unroofed, garages were wrecked and windows and doors were blown out. 19 houses were damaged, six of them seriously. Furnitiure inside houses was also wrecked. The tornado embedded knife-like shards of glass in one bedroom wall.
The street was left looking like a mini war-zone. Trees, shrubs and tall kanuka were torn from the ground and branches, timber, roofing iron, plumbing, pipes and other debris littered the area.
The tornado was about 100 m wide.
Heavy rain had been falling all morning and there was a brief lull in the weather when the tornado hit.
