An active front is forecast to move slowly north over the South Island during Thursday, bringing heavy rain to parts of central and southern New Zealand. The heaviest rain is expected in the western and southern districts of the South Island and also about the headwaters of the Canterbury and Otago lakes and rivers and a Heavy Rain Warning is in place for the affected areas. This is expected to be an exceptional heavy rainfall event for Westland with flooding and slips likely.
