November 2018 West Coast Storm ( 2018-11-08 )
A trough over southern and central areas brought very heavy rain to the West Coast of the South Island and snow to low levels in inland Canterbury.

MetService SEVERE WEATHER WARNING 8:39 pm Wednesday 07-Nov-2018. Heavy rain and gale northwesterlies for parts of central and southern New Zealand.
An active front is forecast to move slowly north over the South Island during Thursday, bringing heavy rain to parts of central and southern New Zealand. The heaviest rain is expected in the western and southern districts of the South Island and also about the headwaters of the Canterbury and Otago lakes and rivers and a Heavy Rain Warning is in place for the affected areas. This is expected to be an exceptional heavy rainfall event for Westland with flooding and slips likely.

Goat Creek
About 20 metres of road leading onto the Goat Creek Bridge, south of Otira, completely collapsed. This effectively closed SH73 between Arthur’s Pass and Jacksons.

Haupiri River
A woman drowned after she fell into the swollen Haupiri River when a stop bank, on which she had been walking, suddenly gave way.

Civil Defence opened a welfare centre for locals and tourists.
The South Westland Area School and was closed due to road closures, flooding and slips in the region. The police escorted some students home from the school.

Hokitika
State Highway 6 was closed between Hokitika and Haast due to flooding and landslides. Many motorists were trapped by the closure of SH6.
