There had been 50 weather-related call-outs in the Wellington by late afternoon, mainly around the Johnsonville, Kilbirnie and Hataitai areas. The period between 10am and midday was particularly busy.
A man working at Spicer Landfill was injured at about 9am when he picked up a stray piece of roofing iron and a wind gust caught the iron, lifting him off his feet and dumping him about four metres away. The back of his head was gashed and needed five stitches.
There was a crash on the Rimutaka Hill, where a van had been tipped over by the strong winds around 11am.
Winds of 130 km/hr, gusting to 160 km/hr, made travel over the Rimutaka Ranges dangerous.
Two vehicles were blown off the road in Wainuiomata.
There were a number of powerlines down aound Wellington city.
At Wellington airport, two flights were cancelled due to severe winds and other flights were delayed.
Gale force winds and driving rain forced organizers of the Queen Charlotte Multisport race in the Marlborough Sounds to alter the kayak course to Picton to a course inside Waikawa Bay due to heavy seas off the Snout. Many kayakers were still tossed out into the sea and the kayak section was eventually called off.
