It struck at 9pm on the 23rd of November.
The wind roared in from the sea south of Ohakea, tore across the southern Manawatu passing slightly south of Sanson and north of Ahuriri. It crossed between Ashhurst and Feilding, moved over the Manawatu Gorge and left a trail of damage in farm settlements between Woodville and Pahiatua.
It began as one of several well-developed thunderclouds embedded in a cold front over central New Zealand.
The power was out.
13 power poles had to be replaced.
The Riverbank dairy factory was out of action.
Many farmers had to use other peoples milking sheds due to the damage to their own.
Several families had to find accommodation until the roofs were fixed on their homes.
The damage to properties was expected to run into the thousands.
The tornado caused a narrow path of destruction quarter of a mile (400 m) wide.
Bodies of cattle and sheep were seen in the gullies.
Winds were estimated to be between 75-100 knots(139-185 km/hr).
The winds lifted roofs, smashed windows and fences and left trees on the ground.
More than 20 houses were damaged in a path of 100 yards (91 m) in width and extending 400 yards (366 m).
