CommentWaitara River broke its banks on the southern side of Waitara township on the 7th. Water engulfed Karaka Flats and residential areas especially West Quay, Queen, Gray, Dommett and Browne streets. The floodwaters reached the commercial centre of the town.

Affected LifelineLogs swept down by the floodbattered Waitara bridge, causing it to be declared unsafe.

ImpactBusiness premises were inundated.

Damage Cost£10,000 ($341,600 2009 dollars) of damage was caused to a drapery business.

Impact100 metres of the eastern seawall was dislodged.

DamageBoats moored in or near the river were swept away.

Affected LifelineRoads were scoured.

Peak DischargeWaitara River had an estimated peak discharge of 100,000 cusecs (2832 cumecs).
