Heavy hail damaged crops in Nelson.
The storm on the night of the 23rd was the worst on record and included hail, rain, thunder and lightning.
The storm area seemed limited to the city, for it was not felt at Stoke or Motueka.
Within the city area, especially in the Toi Toi Valley, the fruit trees and tomato plants were stripped of flowers, immature fruit, and all outdoor vegetables including cucumbers were ruined.
Hail covered the streets and eaves over 6 in (15.2 cm) deep and it lay in drifts up to 18 in (45.7 cm) deep.
Some of the hills were covered as with snow.
The residents along Waimea Road suffered severely from the hail as several glasshouses had most of the glass broken.
Rain flooded numerous dwellings and shops on the ground floor.
At the nurses' quarters in the hospital the flood invaded all the rooms.
