The Bay of Plenty Civil Defence reported that more than 20 houses had roofs lifted off, and 11 were significantly damaged.
There was significant damage to five commercial properties, including Bay Park Stadium (which lost about 10% of its roof).
The damage forced at least eight families to leave their homes.
Fallen power lines cut the electricity supply for four hours after the tornado touched down.
Mt Maunganui Intermediate was closed the following day as a result of considerable damage to the school grounds.
A welfare centre had been set up, but it was not needed.
