Poor weather also prevented air ambulances from Rotorua and Taupo from flying to the scene.
A 63-year-old man incloved in the accident had to undergo surgery for his injuries. A four-year-old boy and his 10-year-old brother were also taken to hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.
