May 1864 Auckland Island Storm ( 1864-05-10 )

The ship 'Invercauld' was wrecked at Auckland Island during a severe gale, with thick weather and heavy seas. There were 22 casualties - six of the crew were drowned and 16 of the survivors later died on the island.

CommentOn the night of the 10th there was a severe gale from northward and thick weather.

DamageThe 'Invercauld' was wrecked at Auckland Island on the 10th. The ship struck on the north-west corner of Auckland Island (North West Cape) and went to pieces in less than 30 minutes.

InjuriesThe surf was very heavy, and all 19 survivors were more or less injured when they were washed ashore.

CasualtiesSix of the crew were drowned - four seamen and two boys. Of those who survived the wreck, 16 died from exposure and starvation on the island.

ImpactOnly three of the crew survived on the island, and were rescued just over a year later on 20th May 1965.
