March 2001 West Coast Tornado and Canterbury High Winds ( 2001-03-28 )

Cobden, near Greymouth, was hit by a tornado which caused damage to 20 houses. In Canterbury, high winds caused road accidents and power cuts.

DamageThe tornado caused significant damage in Cobden.

Property DamageThree streets took the brunt of the tornado. Five or six homes lost their roofs and more than 20 others were damaged to a lesser extent.

Property DamageGarages and glass-houses wre destroyed.

DamageFences and trees were felled.

Affected LifelinePower was cut.

CommentThe tornado left a clump of metre-long seaweed on roof of a house two kilometres from the beach.

Peak Wind SpeedWinds up to 140 km/hr battered North and Central Canterbury overnight on the 28th.

Affected LifelineIt cut main roads and power to some homes.

Affected LifelineState Highway 1 beyween Cheviot and Ward and the highway to Lewis Pass were closed at one stage.

ImpactA truck overturned and several caravans and some cars were blown over or off the roads.

InjuriesA truck driver was injured.

DamageSheds, trees and power lines were bowled over throughout the area.

ImpactThe Fire Service were extremely busy with wind-related incidents and dealt with several minor vegetation fires.

CommentThe wind was easing on the morning of the 29th.
