A sudden tornado swept through Cobden about 4am on the 28th.
The tornado caused significant damage in Cobden.
Three streets took the brunt of the tornado. Five or six homes lost their roofs and more than 20 others were damaged to a lesser extent.
Garages and glass-houses wre destroyed.
Fences and trees were felled.
Power was cut.
The tornado left a clump of metre-long seaweed on roof of a house two kilometres from the beach.
It was accompanied by lightning.
Winds up to 140 km/hr battered North and Central Canterbury overnight on the 28th.
It cut main roads and power to some homes.
State Highway 1 beyween Cheviot and Ward and the highway to Lewis Pass were closed at one stage.
A truck overturned and several caravans and some cars were blown over or off the roads.
A truck driver was injured.
Sheds, trees and power lines were bowled over throughout the area.
The Fire Service were extremely busy with wind-related incidents and dealt with several minor vegetation fires.
