March 1997 Hawke's Bay Hail ( 1997-03-22 )

A hail storm in Hawke's Bay caused severe damage to crops. Heavy rain and flooding were experienced in the Waikato and a waterspout caused some damage in Auckland.

Comments:

CauseOn the 22d, a front associated with a depression passed east over the North Island, followed by unstable air, responsible for the hail storm in Hawke's Bay. On the 23rd, unstable, cyclonically-rotating air moved over northern districts, bringing bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms, including a waterspout in Auckland.

CommentA waterspout and three funnel clouds were sighted in Auckland on the 23rd. The waterspout moved south-west over the east of Devonport, and made landfall at Kohimarama Beach.
