March 1997 Hawke's Bay Hail ( 1997-03-22 )
A hail storm in Hawke's Bay caused severe damage to crops. Heavy rain and flooding were experienced in the Waikato and a waterspout caused some damage in Auckland.

On the 22d, a front associated with a depression passed east over the North Island, followed by unstable air, responsible for the hail storm in Hawke's Bay. On the 23rd, unstable, cyclonically-rotating air moved over northern districts, bringing bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms, including a waterspout in Auckland.

A waterspout and three funnel clouds were sighted in Auckland on the 23rd. The waterspout moved south-west over the east of Devonport, and made landfall at Kohimarama Beach.
The waterspout twisted shop awnings and tossed tables and chairs.

The hail stones were up to golf ball size, with a diameter of 30 mm (3.0 cm), and were jagged.
The hail severely damage crops. 200 orchards suffered millions of dollars of damage, with apples and vegetables lost.

A Ruahapia Road grower said his Pacific Rose, Braeburn, and Granny Smith apple crop had serious flesh damage. An Otene Road grower had 50-60% of his crop damaged.
