High winds caused power cuts and road closures in Hawke's Bay. There was serious damage to the apple crop.

Gisborne

CommentThere were strong winds in Gisborne on the 17th.

ImpactStrong winds flung a school bus off a back country road on the morning of the 17th. The bus rolled 30 m down a bank and was completely wrecked.

InjuriesThere were three occupants and two were injured. The driver (a man) received leg and shoulder injuries and a 10 year old girl got concussion.

Peak Wind SpeedHawke's Bay experienced westerly winds on the 17th reaching 85 km/hr.

Crop DamageApples are most susceptible to wind damage especially Granny Smiths and Braeburn. Granny Smiths were hardest hit by the winds with at least five percent of the crop on the ground. There was also damage from wind rub. Up to ten percent of the total apple crop was likely to be damaged from the wind.

Crop DamageIt was estimated that there was $2,000,000 ($2,954,000 2009 dollars) worth of damage to apple orchards.

Affected LifelineWind caused power lines to clash and trees to fall on lines. 12 power poles were brought down and five power poles were broken.

Affected LifelineThe power at Tikokino, Tutira, Maraetotara, Paukawa and Maraekakaho was disrupted.

Affected LifelineIn central Hawke's Bay fallen trees reduced some minor roads to one lane.

CommentTikokino and Porangahau bore the brunt of the storm.

CommentThere was a northerly gale blowing in Wellington from the 16th to the 19th of March.

CauseThe gale force winds were due to a deep low creating a lot of high and low gradient.

DamageThe wind caused heavy damage. Roofs were lifted, trees were uprooted, powerlines were snapped, moored yachts were driven onto rocks and chimneys were broken.

Peak Wind SpeedWind were gusting to almost 150 km/hr.

Affected LifelineFlights were cancelled for hours.

ImpactTwo drivers were forced to abandon their cars on the Rimutaka Hill Road.

DamageThe ketch "St Michael" was damaged and stranded in York Bay.

DamageIn the Wairarapa there was damaged to apple crops, trees were uprooted and there were power black outs.

ImpactThe wind caused a car to roll in the sea off Evans Bay.

Damage CostNets 15 m high at the Lower Hutt Golf driving range were shredded. The nets cost $15,000 ($22,000 2009 dollars).
