Invercargill Airport was flooded on the 13th after a stopbank by the water pump and windsock collapsed at about 10:30am. Most of the runways were covered in water and all flights were cancelled until at least the 25th. The airport was expected to be under water until at least the 20th.
There was up to 18 in (46 cm) of water in the terminal building at 2pm on the 13th. The level in other airport buildings was up to 2-3 ft (61-91 cm) in places. On the 17th the water around the back of the hangars was still about 70 cm deep.
A breach was created in the Waihopai River stopbank at the eastern end of the airport to allow the water to drain. Water was being pumped out of the grounds at a rate of about 35,000 gallons a minute.
Repairs to the airport runway and stopbanks and the refitting of the terminal could cost up to $200,000 ($371,300 2008 dollars). An area of runway about 45 m long had lifted. Damage to the terminal was not as extensive as in the 1984 flood, but walls and wall linings required stripping to about waist level. Damage to non-council airport buildings was about $200,000 ($371,300 2008 dollars) as well.
