Auckland experienced a gale with high winds and heavy rain, which brought flooding to the city, and caused extensive damage.

CommentAuckland experienced a gale of wind and rain, which set in on the 30th and raged for several days. The gale subsided on the forenoon of 1st April.

DamageThe damage and loss caused by the recent flood was very great, and considerably increased by the gale on the 31st.

CommentThere had not been such heavy weather in Auckland for about thirty years.

ImpactThe main loss was in Queen Street, where the great rainfall from high ground contributed to a great flood between the Wharf and the Army and Navy Hotel.

ImpactThree fire engines, each manned by a dozen men, were pumping the water out of three cellars in Lower Queen Street from 8pm on the 30th until 2am on the 1st.
