A front moved across the north of the North Island during June 19, with thunderstorms and heavy downpours of rain. One of these storms spawned a tornado in South Auckland which left a trail of destruction in Papatoetoe.

Insurance claims totalled $32 million.
The storm lifted roofs, toppled trees, shattered windows, downed powerlines and sent trampolines flying in the suburb of Papatoetoe about 8:30am.
A worker at the freight container hub in Wiri Station Road was killed when several containers were toppled by the strong wind.
Two workers at the freight container hub in Wiri Station Road were taken to hospital, suffering moderate and minor injuries.
About 1200 homes in Papatoetoe were affected by the tornado. Most of them were without power. Sixty were deemed to be uninhabitable
A Civil Defence welfare centre was set up at the Otara Pool and Leisure Centre.
