About 175 millimeters of rain fell in the 24 hours from 4am 3 June to 4am 4 June. This exceeded the one-in-100 year flood level which was 120mm during 24 hours.
The South Dunedin area was badly affected by widespread and prolonged flooding as a result of the rainfall which fell on 3 June. Other areas affected included low-lying coastal areas, such as Kaikorai Valley, Brighton, Mosgiel and North East Valley.
The deluge washed away roads, caused slips, left debris strewn across the city, and contaminated water with sewage.
More than 3000 calls were fielded by the Dunedin City Council's call centre. The Fire Service responded to 345 events on 4 June, with 90 per cent of those in the South Dunedin area. An additional 20 police officers were assigned to South Dunedin to deter any would-be looters.
The army helped volunteers desperately sandbag 100 houses in the Dunedin seaside suburb of St Kilda as water threatened to devastate the properties.
The Civil Defence Welfare Committee set up a welfare centre at the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church.
All kindergartens, primary and intermediate schools in Dunedin were closed on 4 June. King's High School, Queen's High School and Taieri College were also closed.
About 160 Dunedin households lost power because of either flooding damage to electrical equipment or the power was disconnected as a safety precaution.
About 75 people were evacuated from the Radius Fulton rest home, on the corner of Eastbourne St and Hillside Rd, due to flooding.
Houses in Cutten St, South Dunedin, were evacuated and Red Cross volunteers went door to door in the surrounding area to check on people.
The Forbuy Park Trotting Club meeting scheduled for Thursday night was abandoned due to flood damage to the track and stabling area.
The NZTA issued a warning for drivers in other parts of Otago. There was flooding on parts of State Highway 8 between the Lindis Pass and Cromwell. At least nine roads in Clutha were closed: Lakeside Road at the railway underbridge, Akatore Road at Big Creek, Papatowai Highway at Caberfeidh Hill, Karoro Creek and Mt Wallace, Back, Springfield, Allison and Remote Roads.
