A storm bringing heavy rain and strong winds caused damage in Gisborne, Bay of Plenty and Northland on 13 June 2009.

Affected LifelineA storm on Friday 13 June 2009 caused havoc for the Gisborne local power network, triggering a series of power outages. More than 100 homes in the Whataupoko and Mangapapa area were affected by a faulty pole that needed propping up in the Hospital Hill area. A broken conductor affected power supply to homes in Kaiti and Wainui. The power problems were caused by the rain, wind and flying debris.

Peak RainfallThe heaviest rain fell in the East Coast hill country, with the area inland from Tokomaru Bay to Ruatoria recording between 120 and 170 millimetres in the 24 hours to 8 am Saturday 14 June 2009. 55mm of rainfall fell at Matawai and 67 mm at Wharekopae.
