Snow fell to near sea level in Dunedin, South Otago, Southland and Fiordland.
State Highway 1 between Milton and Balclutha was closed. State Highway 93, the alternative route between Clinton and Matarua, was also closed. State Highway 87 was also closed.
Temperatures dipped to -4 degrees Celcius in parts of inland Otago.
Dunedin was brought to a standstill on the morning of Tuesday 16 June 2009, as the airport and motorways north and south of the city were closed by snow and ice. Schools were also closed because buses could not take the students to school. Many Dunedin business closed with staff unable to get to work.
In South Dunedin a line fault on Hillside Road left much of the area without power.
