A storm brougth heavy rain, flooding, high winds and high seas to the upper North Island. Properties were flooded, and four homes were evacauted at Awanui, Northland.

CommentHeavy Rain Warnings were issued for Coromandel Peninsula and north of Orewa on the night of the 28th.

CauseA low moved from the north Tasman Sea to the area west of Northland. A strengthening north-east flow lay over the northern North Island, with the front moving slowly southwards onto Northland. A small low moved south-westwards along the front, with CVA and upper divergence activating the front.

CommentTearing winds and thick belts of rain swept through the northern half of the North Island on the 28th.

ImpactThe weather contributed to vehicle accidents.

Affected LifelineSections of every Auckland motorway had to be closed after surface flooding.

Affected LifelineProblems with the North Shore sewerage system overloading were the worst since July 1998. For up to 12 hours after the storm, raw sewage oozed from popped manholes and 1/3 of the 86 coastal and suburban pumping stations that feed the wastewater treatment plant in Albany.

ImpactSo many sewage pumping stations overflowed that the council closed 12 beaches from Stanley Point in the south to Long Bay in the north.

ImpactEast Coast bays fire crews took 20 calls for help from 2:50am on the 29th.
