July 2020 Upper North Island Flooding ( 2020-07-15 )

Over the period 15-19 July there were heavy rainfalls and subsequent flooding in some northern parts of the North Island. During this period was a deep slow-moving low in the North Tasman Sea, and persistent high pressure over and to the south of the South Island. There were several outbreaks of very heavy rain in the north of the North Island with some areas experiencing significant flooding, especially parts of Northland.

Please note, for Northland, localised downpours and thunderstorms are still possible during today and Sunday, but the threat of widespread heavy rain has passed and the Warning is now lifted.

CommentWelfare centres were set up at Kamo and Onerahi in Whangarei,, and in Kawakawa and Moerewa. About 30 households evacuated their homes, as more than 220 mm of rain fell in the district in 10 hours.

CommentThe Far North District Council reported flooding, slips and fallen trees throughout the region. Numerous key roads, including State Highways, were affected by flash flooding.

DamageResidents in Whangarei and Paihia were asked to conserve water, as flooding had closed two water treatment plants.

DamageSome Northland residents may have to wait six months before they can move back into their home..

CommentThe Hikuwai River in the Uawa catchment peaked at 12.25 metres, making it the highest flood level since 2005, and the third highest flow on record in 45 years.
