July 2014 Upper North Island Storm ( 2014-07-08 )

From 8-12 July there was a very strong moist northeasterly flow over the north of the North Island. This brought severe gales, which blew down trees, blew roofs off houses and cut power to thousands of households. There was also prolonged heavy rain which caused flooding in some areas. Northland was worst affected, with much damage resulting.

CauseA low pressure system was centred in the northern Tasman Sea and an anticyclone lay to the east of NZ. This resulted in a very strong moist northeasterly flow over the north of the North Island, bringing severe gales and prolonged heavy rain.

Insurance ClaimInsurance claims for the storm total $15.1 million.

Affected LifelineThe Ministry of Social Development had received more than 130 requests for food, clothing and fuel, mostly as the result of power outages, in the Kaitaia, Kawakawa and Kaikohe areas.

ImpactThe Fire Service responded to more than 120 weather-related calls across Northland. Most callouts were for roofs being blown off and trees landing on roads.

Crop Damage Some avocado orchards in the Far North and Whangarei district were hit hard, especially those in exposed eastern areas. The cost of the storm to that industry was estimated at $13.5 million, with a 30% loss of crop.

Crop DamageDairyNZ estimated that 5000 hectares of grass on dairy farms in the region was expected to remain under water for 10 days, and would take three months to become productive again. The cost of regrassing was conservatively estimated at $660 per hectare, while other costs would include fencing, repairing races and the loss of calves.

Affected Lifeline State Highway 1, south of Kawakawa, was closed when a 70m section of road collapsed. Mangakahia Road became the only direct route to the Far North after the State Highway 1 closure. Mangakahia Road was also damaged by the storm; that road remained open to cars, but trucks and tankers had to take the alternate route of State Highway 12 up the west coast through Hokianga, which added over two hours to journey times to the Far North.

The area was extensively flooded, and there were strong currents across paddocks leading into the Waitangi River. Three other people, who were stuck in trees or on car and shed roofs in the vicinity, were rescued.

CommentA welfare centre was set up at the Haruru Bledisloe Hall for residents affected by flooding.
