About 450 households in Tauranga were without power.
Shipping operations at the port were suspended due to the high seas.
Power was cut off to 12,000 Auckland homes.
About 20 small yachts or launches around the region broke off their moorings or dragged their anchors and went ashore.
Flooding closed parts of Auckland's northern motorway and Tamaki Drive
The ASB Classic tennis tournament at Auckland was a washout.
The Auckland Zoo was closed, to keep visitors and the animals safe.
Boats were ripped off their moorings and then smashed into rocks in Algies Bay.
Parts of State Highway 25 between Thames and Manaia were closed due to slips and rock falls. Most of the Coromandel Peninsula was affected by flooding and numerous road closures.
Some streets and properties in Thames were flooded by the sea. People in low-lying parts of the Firth of Thames were told to evacuate urgently
The Sunset Motel, north of Thames, was evacuated as flood waters started to encroach the site.
The Whitianga Ferry shut down operations because the high winds and water levels made it unsafe.
State Highway 1 on either side of Kaikoura was closed due to surface flooding and small landslips.
Parts of the Heathcote and Avon rivers overflowed their banks. There was surface flooding on roads alongside the Heathcote and Avon rivers. New Brighton Rd was closed due to flooding
