A hail storm in Wairarapa caused extensive damage to apple and pear crops. Otago was hit by a hail storm but with only minor damage.
At the same time as the Wairarapa hail event on the 7th, a tornado appeared to move east over Dannevirke, but didn't make ground contact.
It was associated with a storm which moved across southern Hawkes Bay and into the Ruahine Ranges between 5pm and 6pm.
The storm struck at 6:00pm on the 7th, with hail and torrential rain.
Isolated hail storms occurred because of very hot temperatures, low-level moisture and lack of wind.
The worst hit were at least eight orchards three kilometres east of Masterton. There was severe damage to apples and pears. Two apple orchards had 100 percent losses.
Hail broke windows and skylights in Masterton.
There were reports of birds being killed and others were knocked senseless from trees.
Verandahs, carport roofs and vehicles were damaged.
Some hail stones were the size of golf balls and had a diameter of 4 cm.
Insurance industry payouts were $1,500,000 (2001 dollars).
Grapes were also severely damaged.
It was the heaviest storm in living memory.
The hail punched holes in leaves and bruised fruit.
$1,000,000 (2001 dollars) of fruit was lost in 20 minutes.
