Heavy rain brought severe flooding and slips to the Nelson area. A Civil Defence Emergency was declared for the region, and properties and roads were damaged. A boy was drowned in a Nelson stream.

Crop DamageThe Wairoa River swept away 1.5 acres (0.61 ha) of land and a block of kiwifruit, and flattened 1 acre (0.40 ha) of apple trees. One orchardist estimated the damage to his orchard at $50,000 ($110,000 2008 dollars).

Property DamageSilt and debris was littered all over the land. One farmer had 5-6 acres (2.0-2.4 ha) of land under 0.5 m of silt and many of his fences had been washed away.

CommentThe flood in the Maitai River was comparable with the earlier floods in 1983 and 1970.

Affected LifelineDamage was done to the sewerage system, with sewerage pipes badly damaged in some areas. Sewerage was reported to be entering manholes in the Upper Weka Street-Cambridge area.

CasualtiesA 16-year-old boy was drowned on the 25th when he was riding on an inflated inner tube and was swept away by the Brook Stream.

DamageDamage was done to the Maitai River and Brook Stream in the city.

Property DamageA sea of mud and rock smashed into a home on the 25th. The retaining walls behind the house crumbled under the onslaught of rain and pressure, and 3.5 tonnes of mud slid into the back of the house. The house was lifted and moved 30 cm, damaging the roof, floor and piles. The house had cost $58,000 six months prior ($127,000 2008 dollars).
