There was a south westerly flow at the time, with a wind direction of west-north-west.
The hail was associated with thunderstorms and a tornado in the western suburbs of Christchurch.
The hail stones were up to 5 cm in diameter.
Crops were damaged.
There were 65 insurance claims.
