January 1962 Wellington Flooding

There was flooding in Upper Hutt and southern Wairarapa. Two people drowned when the car they were in dropped into a large washout on the Rimutaka Highway near Featherston.

Several sites in the Wairarapa received 145-165 mm (14.5-16.5 cm) of rain.
Rainfall had an annual recurrance interval of over 100 years.
Flooding
Duration: 2 days - There was flooding in the Upper Hutt and southern Wairarapa on the 13th and 14th of January 1962.
Some homes were evacuated in parts of Upper Hutt and Stokes Valley.
People were moved from silted and mudded homes.
Two people drowned when the car they were in dropped into a large washout on the Rimutaka Highway near Featherston.

Lower Hutt
At Woburn, Black Creek became flooded due to a tree falling across and damming it.
A large part of the Wilford area of Petone was under water.
General motors in Petone was flooded by four inches (10 cm) of water.

Upper Hutt
Hutt River rose 14 ft 6 in (4.42 m) at Upper Hutt on the 14th.
Two people were taken to hospital from Upper Hutt.
Multi Hazard
Upper Hutt was isolated by a large slip blocking the Taita Gorge Road and by 3 ft (0.91 m) of water over the road near Silverstream.
