Severe thunderstorms hit Abel Tasman National Park, Motueka, Tasman Bay, Riwaka and Kaiteriteri, bringing heavy rain and hail to the area.

CommentA Motueka fruit growers association said that millions of dollars of fruit was ruined by the hail storm. Some growers lost their entire crop. The crops that were worst affected were apples, kiwifruit and hops.

CommentThe hailstorm also severely damaged buildings in Motueka. Some buildings were red-stickered and deemed no longer safe to enter.

CommentThe hail stones were large enough to punch through structures designed to protect the crops.

CommentThe hail lay on the ground up to 50 cm deep in places.
