December 2011 Tasman-Nelson Heavy Rain and Flooding

There was very heavy rain in Tasman-Nelson which resulted in flooding and numerous slips in the region.

Insurance claims totalled $16.8 million.
An active front, preceded by a strong and very humid northeasterly flow, moved very slowly eastwards across New Zealand, resulting in very heavy rainfall in the Tasman-Nelson region.
A state of emergency was declared on 14 December, and the National Crisis Management Centre at Parliament was activated. The state of emergency is likely to last through Christmas, so that the red-stickering on properties will still be in effect.

In the 24 hours to 15 December 3 am, 423 mm rain fell at Takaka, 368mm at Anatoki, 329mm at Brook, 205mm at Richmond, and 323 mm at Roding.

Collingwood was inaccessible as SH60 was closed past Takaka.

100 residents at Cable Bay were isolated due to a landslide. Supplies had to be airlifted in, and a pregnant woman was evacuated. Power was out to about 45 homes. The area was expected to remain isolated for about 1 week.

Holiday makers were stranded at the campground, as the only access road was closed by a landslide.
