The trough moved away to the east overnight on 8th/9th August, allowing a strong and very cold southerly flow to cover New Zealand. Snow showers fell in the east of the South Island, and over the central North Island. Winds reached gale force in exposed places, especially about Cook Strait.

Twenty-five vehicles were stranded by the heavy snow on State Highway 73 at Arthur’s Pass.
Lewis Pass was closed because of the heavy snow.
The Desert Road was closed between Rangipo and Waiouru because of the heavy snow.
Cook Strait ferry crossings on 9 August were cancelled due to the strong winds.
Strong winds disrupted flights into and out of Wellington Airport.
