The roof of The Cloud events centre on Auckland’s Queens Wharf was lifted by very strong winds overnight on 11 August.
A family had to find emergency overnight accommodation on 11 August after very strong winds blew the roof off their home, and it was deemed unsafe for the family to stay there.
Very strong winds, associated with squally weather and thunderstorms on 12 August, overturned boats and blew over shipping containers in downtown Auckland. The Great Barrier Island car ferry broke off its mooring line.
Two people were injured when they were hit by flying debris from the tornado on 12 August.
About 800 properties were without power after the stormy weather.
Roofs were lifted off houses, windows blown in, fences were blown over and trees were felled.
Heavy snow closed SH73 from Springfield to Arthur’s Pass on 10 August.
Heavy snow closed SH7 through Lewis Pass on 10 August.
The heaviest rain affected parts of South Canterbury and Eastern Otago, with flooding in places. SH1 between Oamaru and Timaru was closed for a while. Oamaru recorded 78mm on 10 August, which was a new August record.
Snow closed the road between Te Anau and Milford on 10 August.
