Thunderstorms brought lightning and heavy rain to parts of the North Island, and a tornado struck Huntly in the Waikato. The tornado caused damage to buildings, trees and powerlines. Lightning damaged about 20 homes in Auckland.
Lightning struck Southern Cross Road in Kohimarama just after 11:30am on 12th.
About 20 homes on both sides of the road suffered some damage. The lightning shattered dozens of windows and glass doors, skinned a 40-year-old Norfolk pine tree, blew plaster and wallpaper off walls, blew the lid off a toilet cistern and left a deep hole in a concrete driveway.
Shattered glass from windows flew up to 10m away.

The tornado caused significant damage to buildings and fences. Roofs were ripped off several buildings, including the local rugby league club and a number of houses. The tornado ripped a gaping hole in one house roof and reduced a barn on a hill to a quarter its size.
Trees were felled.
Fences and live power lines were blown down at Huntly Primary School, blocking entry into the school until emergency services cleared the lines.
Power lines were blown down, leaving more than 1000 Wel Energy custmomers without power.
A radio station in Taranaki was knocked off the air when lightning hit a transmitter.
