Heavy rain caused flooding in the Heretaunga Plains.

Duration:   3  days - There was a moderately severe storm in Hawke's Bay on the 23rd to the 24th August 1990. Flooding occurred until the 25th.
Comments:

CauseA deep depression moving eastwards over the northern North Island produced northeasterly winds which caused heavy rain in catchments exposed to storms from that direction.

ImpactThe heaviest rain fell along the coastal plains area and overtaxed some drainage systems. Central and southern areas received steady rainfall (40mm several gauges in Heretaunga Plains, 40-80mm in ranges )

ImpactHeretaunga Plains flooded. Ponding occurred in a number of localities especially at pumping stations.

ImpactThere was widespread slips, flooding and failing sewerage systems.
