August 1960 Auckland Tornado ( 1960-08-14 )

A tornado struck the North Shore, causing damage to properties and injuring one woman. Hail also fell and rain caused further damage to homes.

CommentThe tornado swept in from the sea and was shaped like an ice cream cone 80 ft (24 m) high.

DamageThe tornado left a trail of damage for 5 miles (8 km) through the residential area.

InjuriesOne woman was cut by flying glass.

Property DamageDamage was done to 12 properties. Roofs or parts of roofs were ripped off and two chimneys were demolished.. Houses and garages were lifted off their foundations, and many windows were shattered. Several garages were badly damaged.

DamageBoats were damaged.

Affected LifelineThe tornado left a tangle of power and telephone lines. Electric power and telephone lines were disrupted.

CommentRoofing iron from houses high above Castors Bay was seen swirling in the air over Lake Pupuke.

DamageIron pipes 1.5 in (3.8 cm) thick, holding up wire tennis court netting, were bent at right angles.

Property DamageOn the 15th, rain poured through the gaping roofs of tornado-wrecked homes. Three ceilings sufferred severe damage and cracked under the rain. Some walls had to be replaced.
