The Riripo Waka Te Haua Marae, about 50 km south of Dargaville, took the full brunt of the winds. The wooden marae hall was torn apart, with windows and the front foor blown in. The raised floor and concrete steps were all that remained of the hall. The marae cookhouse roof was also badly damaged.
A number of people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
A 41-year-old man suffered a large cut to his head from flying debris.
A 3-year-old girl received severe bruising to the back of her head caused by falling timber.
Two cars parked outside were picked up and deposited 40 m away. Three caravans were destroyed, one of them being picked up and dumped into the sea.
An empty house and a woolshed were wrecked.
Big Avocado orchard was severely damaged, with about 600 avocado trees covering 10 ha flattened.
The tornado carved a 3-km long path of destruction between 50 to 400 m wide through 21-year-old pine trees in the Pouto Forest Farm. An estimated 25,000 mature trees were toppled. An estimated 100 ha of the farm's 4000 ha were affected and 50 hectares of forest destroyed.
The tornado damage to Pouto was estimated at at least $1 million ($1,460,000 2008 dollars).
