A depression was heading north-east from the south-east of the South Island.

Wind was gusting up to 111 km/hr and wind speed averaged about 55-65 km/hr.

Waves in Cook Strait were up to 7 and 8 m high.
Arhura ferry rolled 41 degrees when it was hit by a wave. Passengers were thrown against walls and cars shunted into each other. Some passengers received minor injuries.

Rain accompanied the wind.

Hutt Valley
Some parts of the roads were covered knee deep in water.
Landslide
Numerous roads were due to slips.

70 knot (130 km/hr) winds whipped waves onto the road way.
