Heavy rain and sudden thaw of snow caused flooding in Otago and Southland
Sudden thaw of late snow on ranges in Central Otago was caused by warm northerly winds and heavy rain in the Lakes district
Creeks rose swiftly in the area and were in full flood
Outlying roads were covered by water from creeks in some parts, particularly at Glendhu and Cardrona
The Queensberry-Wanaka road rendered impassable and creeks were over the road between Lowburn and Queensbury

Clutha River was in high flood on the night of the 16th October 1946 as it swept past Roxburgh, estimated that it had risen ~9 ft (2.74m) at that point

At Alexandra the Clutha River had risen from 5 ft (1.5m) on 14/10/1946 to 20 ft (6.1m) on the afternoon of 16/10/1946 and continued to rise
Record level of Clutha River at Alexandra of 26 ft 11 in (8.2m) during 1946 flood
Manuherikia River had risen substantially
