Otago experienced heavy rainfall on the eastern side of the Horse Range, Kakanui Mountains and along the eastern faces of the Rock and Pillar Range behind Middlemarch and at the back of the Waikouaiti River. This lead to flooding in Oamaru and Maheno.
A complex depression moved from the south-west to the north-east. East to south east winds around the southern side of this depression caused extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal and hinterland areas of North Otago.
The highest rainfall was on the eastern side of the Horse Range and Kakanui Mountains.
Other isolated areas of heavy rain were along the eastern faces of the Rock and Pillar Range, behind Middlemarch, and at the back of the Waikaouaiti River.
State Highway 1 was blocked by 2 ft (0.61 m) of water at Maheno and Hampden.

State Highway 83 from Oamaru to Kurow was blocked at Peebles and Papakaio by water.
Damage was confined to the Taieri, Tokomairiro and Kakanui catchment. Coastal tributaries between Hampden and the Waitaki River were all in high flood
There were many cases of flooding, bank erosion and road damage.
From Herbert to Hampden, floodwaters were 1.2 m deep over State Highway 1.
