Heavy rain and melting snow cause flooding in Southland and Otago
There was a southerly and a day of heavy rain which resulted in flooding of low lying areas.
There were some stock losses.
The damage in Bruce County totalled £1000 ($103,350 2009 dollars).
Many roads and railways blocked by water at Otokia and Lovells Flats and there was a large washout 100 metres in length at Benhar.
Tairei River rose 5 ft (1.52 m) above normal at Middlemarch and the plains were extensively flooded.
The Main South Road in Otokia was flooded to a depth of 4 ft (1.22 m)
Tokomairiro River in heavy flood and large areas of land was inundated.
Dunedin recorded 3.72 in (9.45 cm) of rain in 24 hours.
The worst flooding occurred in the city. The downpour caused surface water to pool on low lying reserves and areas at the north end and south of Dunedin were inundated.
Two houses were flooded and the residents evacuated.
Milton recorded 3.38 in (8.59 cm) of rain in 28 hours.
Cromwell recorded 1.24 in (3.15 cm) of rain in 24 hours.

Generally the flood was thought to be the highest and most serious since 1913.

Lumsden suffered severely and floodwaters poured down the main street.
