A 15-m fishing boat broke free from its mooring in Port Taranaki marina in heavy swells and strong, gusty winds and ended up high and dry on Ngamotu Beach in early morning on the 12th. It suffered major hull damage from smashing on to rocks and had to be lifted off the sand with cranes.
A ship coming into Port Taranaki on the 12th lost 3 containers over the side as it rolled in heavy swells.
Heavy rainfall over 18 hours swelled the Whanganui River on the 12th.
Lower Hutt received 26 mm of rain between 4am and 6am on the 12th.
On the 12th there was severe surface flooding on the Western Hutt Road (SH2) in the northbound lanes between Normandale lights and Normandale.

One resident of Washington Rd said water was about 40 cm deep in her garage, and was also in an adjacent lounge room.
Nelson City Council received more than 100 calls from householders about flooding problems. The Nelson Fire Service received more than 20 calls between 8am and 10am, mostly from residents whose houses or garages were flooded.
A man in Brittania Heights slipped on his roof in the rain, injuring his back, while attempting to clear a gutter. He slid down the roof, grabbing the edge of it, before he was left dangling over a two-storey drop. He was rescued by a passing motorist.
There were reports of flooding in Selwyn Pl, Totara St, Vanguard St, Brougham St, Bronte St, Nile St, King St, Hastings St, Russell St, Retone St and Lucas Tce. The sheer volume of water popped several road manhole covers.

Shops in the Marble Arch Arcade off Buxton Square in the central city were flooded with 3 cm of water. In the shop GGS, stock and a juke box were wrecked and carpets had to be dried out. The Amsterdam Cheese Shop opened an hour late after 5 cm of water flooded the shop and $300 worth of stock was lost.
