There was a missing boat with four crew aboard. Great uneasiness was felt for the safety of the scow 'Eclipse', which was lying at anchor in the outer harbour on the evening of the 22nd near Ripa Island. On the morning of the 23rd it was nowhere to be seen, despite a thorough search.
All shipping departures except the 'Takapuna' were postponed.
A large double house on Dampier's Bay Road was wrecked at 5:30am on the 23rd. The occupants escaped out a broken window.
