Waikanae River
Waikanae River was in heavy flood on the 21st April 1956. The flood had a probable frequency of 40 years.
Flood damage was greater than in what occurred during the flood of 1955.
Erosion was particularly severe. Two chains (20 m) of a 25 ft (7.62 m) high bank was eroded to max width of 10 ft (3.05 m).
Farm buildings were washed away.
Waikanae River had an estimated peak discharge of 20,000 cusecs (566 cumecs) at Waikanae Bridge on the 21st from a catchment area of 48 sq miles (124 km^2).
Landslide
Roads suffered minor scouring and large slips occurred.

Low lying urban areas at Waikanae Beach were inundated and covered in silt. Many lawns and gardens were damaged and some houses were flooded.

At Reikorangi five chains (100 m) of the high bank was lost due to the flooding of the Waikanae River.
